There are few better feelings in this world than the feeling you get when you have a basket full of delicious strawberries that you have hand-picked yourself.
Maybe this feeling goes back to the gummy bears, or human hunter-gather instinct? What we can tell you is that Cape Town and Stellenbosch are known for producing some of the best strawberries in the world! Not only that, there are beautiful strawberry farms amongst the vineyards of Stellenbosch where you can pick your own strawberries.
When is strawberry Season in Cape Town?
Strawberry season begins in Cape Town every year between October till December!
How long does Strawberry picking take?
Strawberry picking can take as long as you want it to take, but generally, you'll be done in 20-30minutes!
Strawberry Picking Tips:
Strawberries will not change colour or flavour after picking.
Check the weather report before you go.
Unless you want to look like a strawberry, take a hat and sunscreen
Leave the green stem (calyx) on the strawberry to maximise its shelf life.
Refrigerate your strawberries as soon as possible.
Only wash your strawberries just prior to eating.
1) Mooiberge Starwberry Farm
Mooiberge Strawberry Farm is our favourite strawberry farm. Located right in the heart of the Stellenbosch wine country. This beautiful little farm is a Stellenbosch icon. Established in the early 1900's Mooiberge (Direct Translation "Nice Mountains") is located on the R44, right across the road from the Route 44 Market.

R6 pp and R40 per KG!
The entrance fee to Mooiberge Strawberry farm is R6 per person, entering the field. You are then given a basket and your strawberries are weighed when you are done. The cost is R40 per kilogram, which is a lot cheap than the shops!
Why do we Love Mooiberge?
Besides the quality of strawberries at Mooiberge, they are one of the oldest Strawberry picking farms and their own establishment is geared toward tourism. We love the view of the Stellenbosch mountains, the helpful staff, the art, and the iconic scarecrows in the field. Not only that Mooiberge has a restaurant called, the Thirsty Scarecrow, which is a great place to get lunch and have some drinks.
Bonus: there is a little farm store, that has a variety of local produce and a wine stall that has a huge selection of wine, plus a large range of wines that are meant for export with oversupply. You can get great deals on a wine you won't normally find in South African bottle stores.
